WHAT IS SOCIAL ANXIETY OR SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER

What is social phobia or social anxiety? So , social phobia is the intense form of anxiety or fear of being judged negatively. It is the third most common mental disorder. The people who have this kind of disorder symptoms resembling panic attack during a social encounter. This kind of situation usually happens while speaking in public, eating with people or engaged in social contact in general.

What person feels with this disorder?

A person feels fear of being humiliated or embarrassed in front of people or society. They become intensely anxious with symptoms like increased heart rate, diaphoresis and other signs of autonomic.

CAUSES OF SOCIAL PHOBIA OR SOCIAL ANXIETY:

The exact cause of social phobia is unknown . But according to many researchers it is caused by a combination of both genetics factor and environmental factors. But most common causes includes any kinds of abuse like physical or emotional abuse, bullying and teasing by peers, family conflicts, domestics violence and divorce.

EFFECTS OF THIS DISORDER ON PERSON’S LIFE:

This disorder can wreck havoc on the lives of those
who suffers from it. For example: a person can avoid going out and avoid all kinds of social interactions, they avoid going out with friends, don’t even go out for job. People with social phobia are at an increased risk for developing major depressive disorder and alcohol use disorder.


The average age of onset for social anxiety disorder is during the teenage years. The individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder commonly suffering from extreme shyness in childhood.
The risk factors for this disorders are both genetics and environmental factors. Now a days people are being aware of this disorder.

Social media is playing an important role in creating awareness among people.

TREATMENT:

The most common treatment for social phobia or social anxiety disorder are psychotherapy or psychological counselling. Overall a person with social anxiety has a persistent fear of social or performance situation. This fear is generated by a anxiety of being watched or evaluated in a negative way. This person usually recognizes that their fear is unreasonable or unfounded . However, exposure to social situation inevitably results in anxiety. Usually, this person avoids social situations but, if they are unavoidable they are endured with a great amount of discomfort. Social anxiety, if untreated significantly interferes with a person daily routine and social life.
