“We have made progress in the negotiations and have reached an interim agreement on a number of principles while the agreement is being finalized,” Abdullah wrote in a Twitter message. However, no immediate comment was received from Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

An Afghan official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Abdullah had made a multi-pronged proposal to Ashraf Ghani. Under the offer, Abdullah Abdullah would head peace talks with the Taliban and give his comrades high-ranking government positions, with a 50 per cent share in the government. According to the official, the proposal also includes giving Abdullah Abdullah the post of executive prime minister, but Ashraf Ghani did not approve the proposal.
